About Lighthouse Demo
At Lighthouse Demo, we are building intelligent, user-centric software solutions that help organizations build better teams. Headquartered in Toronto, ON, and operating remotely across Canada, our platform is designed to make the hiring process more seamless, transparent, and effective for both employers and candidates. We believe that great software is built by diverse, highly collaborative teams, and we are committed to fostering an environment where engineers can do their best work.
We are currently looking for a Software Engineering Coop to join our engineering team for a full-time term. At Lighthouse Demo, we don't believe in giving our co-op students busywork. You will be fully embedded in one of our agile product squads, working alongside experienced engineers, product managers, and designers to ship real code to production.
About the Role
As a Software Engineering Coop, you will transition from learning in a classroom to applying your knowledge in a high-velocity, real-world tech environment. Working remotely from anywhere in Canada, you will tackle meaningful technical challenges, contribute to our core applications, and gain deep, hands-on experience with modern software development practices.
This role is designed to be a significant stepping stone in your engineering career. You will be paired with a dedicated senior engineering mentor who will guide you through our architecture, review your code, and help you level up your technical skills. Whether you are passionate about building intuitive user interfaces or designing robust backend APIs, you will have the opportunity to make a tangible impact on our product and our users.
What You'll Do
- Ship Production Code: Write clean, testable, and efficient code to deliver new features and improvements to the Lighthouse Demo platform.
- Collaborate Cross-Functionally: Work closely with product managers, UX/UI designers, and QA to understand user requirements and translate them into technical solutions.
- Participate in Agile Ceremonies: Engage in daily stand-ups, sprint planning, and retrospectives to plan work and continuously improve team processes.
- Engage in Code Reviews: Submit your pull requests for review and actively participate in reviewing your peers' code to ensure high standards of quality and security.
- Write and Maintain Tests: Develop unit and integration tests to ensure the reliability and stability of the features you build.
- Troubleshoot and Debug: Investigate bug reports, identify root causes, and deploy timely fixes to improve the overall user experience.
- Contribute to Documentation: Help maintain internal technical documentation, making our codebases easier for current and future engineers to navigate.
What You'll Bring
- Education: Currently enrolled in a recognized university or college degree program in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related technical field.
- Availability: Eligible for a full-time co-op or internship term, capable of working standard full-time hours for the duration of the placement.
- Core Fundamentals: A strong understanding of computer science fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms, and object-oriented or functional programming principles.
- Programming Skills: Hands-on experience (through coursework, personal projects, or hackathons) with at least one modern programming language such as JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, Ruby, Java, or Go.
- Version Control: Working knowledge of Git and collaborative development workflows (e.g., branching, committing, pull requests).
- Problem-Solving: A high degree of curiosity, a strong analytical mindset, and the resilience to untangle complex technical problems.
- Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, which are essential for thriving in a remote-first work environment.
Nice to Have
- Previous internship or co-op experience in a software engineering or development role.
- Familiarity with modern web frameworks and libraries (e.g., React, Vue.js, Node.js, Django, or Ruby on Rails).
- Basic understanding of database systems (SQL or NoSQL) and the ability to write basic queries.
- Exposure to cloud computing concepts or platforms such as AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure.
What We Offer
- Real-World Impact: The opportunity to work on software that real customers use every day, adding concrete achievements to your resume.
- Dedicated Mentorship: 1:1 guidance from experienced engineers who are invested in your learning and career growth.
- Remote-First Flexibility: Work comfortably from your home anywhere in Canada, while staying connected through our virtual team events and daily syncs.
