Who we need
Reporting to the Network Manager, we are hiring a Network Engineer to join our Infrastructure & Operations team at illumin. As our new Network Engineer, you will play a key role in maintaining, optimizing, and securing our global network infrastructure across data centres in North America and Europe. You will take a hands-on approach to configuring, troubleshooting, and improving our networking environment, working across Juniper switches, FortiGate and Cisco firewalls, HAProxy load balancers, and Linux systems. You will contribute to critical infrastructure initiatives, including completing our migration from Cisco to Juniper, optimizing network routing and security, and improving load balancing performance. Working closely with the Network Manager and collaborating with the Infrastructure and Operations Team, you will help strengthen the reliability, performance, and security of our global network.
This is an existing, full-time remote opportunity based in the Philippines, with working hours aligned to the North American Eastern Time zone and flexibility to support occasional after-hours maintenance and incidents.
What’s in it for you
Impact and ownership. You will play a critical role in maintaining and optimizing the network infrastructure that supports illumin's global operations. You will have broad ownership across the networking environment, taking a hands-on role in completing data centre migrations, strengthening security, improving performance, and resolving complex technical challenges. You will see the direct impact of your work on the reliability and efficiency of our infrastructure.
Exposure to advanced technology. You will work with recently acquired AI-driven Juniper networking technology, gaining hands-on experience with modern data centre infrastructure. You will expand your technical expertise across routing, switching, firewalls, Linux networking, and HAProxy load balancing while contributing to projects that modernize and optimize our global network.
Collaboration and technical growth. You will work closely with the Network Manager and collaborate with our Infrastructure and Operations Team, gaining practical exposure to Python, network automation, and Kubernetes environments. With opportunities to contribute across the full networking stack rather than focusing on a single technology, you will broaden your technical capabilities, tackle complex infrastructure challenges, and help shape how our network evolves.
As their new Network Engineer, you will:
- Manage and optimize global network infrastructure. You will configure, maintain, and troubleshoot network infrastructure across our global data centres, working with Juniper switches, firewalls, load balancers, and Linux systems. You will identify and resolve complex connectivity, routing, latency, and performance issues to maintain a reliable and secure network environment.
- Drive network modernization. You will play a key role in completing our data centre migration from Cisco to Juniper, including configuring and optimizing Juniper switches and routing protocols. You will support infrastructure upgrades, implement network improvements, and help ensure a smooth transition to our modernized networking environment.
- Strengthen network security. You will configure, maintain, and optimize Fortinet FortiGate and Cisco firewalls, managing security policies, network segmentation, NAT, VPNs, and routing. You will troubleshoot security and connectivity issues, identify vulnerabilities, and implement improvements that strengthen our overall network security.
- Optimize load balancing and traffic performance. You will manage and improve HAProxy Enterprise and HAProxy Fusion load balancers running on Ubuntu Linux. You will configure traffic routing, health checks, access controls, and SSL/TLS settings to improve application availability, reliability, and performance.
- Collaborate and improve network operations. You will partner with the Infrastructure & Operations Team to troubleshoot network issues, support Kubernetes environments, and explore opportunities to improve network monitoring and automation. You will maintain accurate network documentation, participate in production changes and incident response, and contribute to continuous improvements in how our infrastructure is managed.
You bring:
- The experience. You have hands-on experience configuring, maintaining, and troubleshooting enterprise network infrastructure, ideally supporting global data centres or complex production environments. You bring a strong understanding of networking fundamentals, including TCP/IP, Layer 2 and Layer 3 networking, VLANs, BGP, routing, and network security. You are comfortable independently investigating complex technical issues and implementing practical solutions.
- The networking expertise. You have hands-on experience with Juniper switching and routing, ideally including QFX/EX switches and Juniper Mist. You understand network configuration, traffic flows, routing protocols, and how to troubleshoot connectivity and performance issues. Familiarity with EVPN/VXLAN is an asset, as are Juniper certifications.
- The security knowledge. You have practical experience configuring and managing enterprise firewalls, particularly Fortinet FortiGate, with exposure to Cisco firewalls. You understand firewall policies, NAT, VPNs, network segmentation, and high availability. You can troubleshoot security and routing issues, assess vulnerabilities, and implement improvements that strengthen network protection.
- The Linux and load balancing skills. You are comfortable working in Linux environments, particularly Ubuntu, using command-line tools to configure systems, investigate issues, and troubleshoot network traffic. You have hands-on experience with HAProxy or comparable load balancing technologies and understand Layer 4 and Layer 7 traffic management, health checks, access controls, and SSL/TLS. Experience with HAProxy Enterprise and HAProxy Fusion is highly valued.
- The technical curiosity. You have an understanding of Kubernetes networking concepts, including pods, services, and ingress, or an interest in expanding your knowledge in this area. You are comfortable collaborating with the Infrastructure & Operations Team, and exposure to Python scripting or network automation is an asset.
- The approach. You are a resourceful, hands-on problem solver who takes ownership of technical challenges from investigation through resolution. You communicate clearly, document your work, and collaborate effectively with colleagues across different teams and locations. You are comfortable working independently as part of a small team, aligning your schedule with North American Eastern Time business hours, and providing flexibility for planned maintenance and occasional after-hours incidents.
